The initiative follows its adhesion to the UN's SSE Initiative

BME has today published a guide on the reporting of environmental, sustainability and coporate governance (ESG) issues for Spanish listed companies, in this way strengthening its commitment to sustainability and the SSE Initiative, which it joined in 2015 and the values it promotes.

The voluntary Guide, entitled Spanish stock exchange's Voluntary Market Guidance for Listed Companies for Corporate Reporting on ESG Information, is intended to be a useful and practical tool to encourage efficient, comprehensive and relevant corporate responsibility reporting among its listed companies.

BME has shared the document with its main issuers and its main association, Emisores Españoles, which was invited to contribute their views to the Guide and provide any relevant feedback.

'By publishing this Guide, BME takes another step forward in promoting ESG issues, encouraging its listed companies to incorporate them into their reporting as investors attach more and more weight to these in their investment decisions. We believe our Guide is a useful tool for improving transparency at a time when information on these issues are most demanded not only by investors but the general public as well', stated Javier Yzaguirre, Director of Markets, BME.

This year the Spanish Stock Market ranked 3rd in the sustainability index compiled by provider of independent investment research Morningstar. In 2013 it was top-ranked in terms of the information on sustainability provided by its listed companies according to a report by the media and research firm CK Capital, entitled 'Trends in Sustainability Disclosure: Benchmarking the World's Stock Exchanges, 2013'. Also a report by the firms PwC and Ecodes, entitled CDP Iberia 125 and published last October, highlighted how Spanish companies are among those leading the fight against climate change at world level.

In 2015 BME joined the UN Sustainable Stock Exchanges initiative (SSE) as a partner Exchange to raise awareness on environmental, social and corporate governance issues, and to spread sustainable business practices. The aim of the SSE initiative is for stock exchanges, investors, authorities and companies to work together to enhance transparency in the capital markets on corporate responsibility issues and to encourage long-term, sustainable investment.
