Borregaard and Borg Havn have signed a collaboration agreement on the design of a modern, sustainable lignin warehouse in Øra off Fredrikstad. A pre-project suggests that the warehouse will be 17 000 square metres in size.

'A warehouse like this will give Borregaard a unique opportunity to position itself for even greener and more future-oriented transport solutions. By using Borg Havn for the location of our lignin warehouses, we are paving the way for moving more goods from road to sea. This reduces the CO emissions associated with road transport and also limits traffic growth on European roads,' says Tuva Barnholt, Senior Vice President, Sourcing and Purchasing

The new warehouse will optimise product flow and improve logistics. Today, Borregaard has numerous warehouses to store lignin, several of these are located outside the Borregaard premises. Lignin is currently transported from Borregaard by road to Borg Havn for delivery to customers. One new centralised warehouse to replace all will therefore make the logistics more efficient with fewer stages of transportation.

The warehouse will be built and owned by Borg Havn and a final decision on construction will be taken during the first quarter of 2018, with completion scheduled for mid-2019.

Borregaard's plant in Sarpsborg has an annual lignin capacity of 160 000 tons, and an increasing proportion is speciality products. A centralised warehouse at Borg Havn is part of a project where Borregaard is investing NOK 500 million in upgrading and specialisation of the Sarpsborg plants producing lignin products. The project also involves enhanced drying capacity, new ideas for the storage of liquid materials and improved solutions for logistics, infrastructure and energy.

Borregaard owns one of the world's most advanced and sustainable biorefineries. By using natural, sustainable raw materials, Borregaard produces advanced and eco-friendly biochemicals that can replace oil-based products. Borregaard has 1,010 employees in factories and sales offices in 16 countries in Europe, America, Asia and Africa. Borregaard also has strong positions in ingredients and fine chemicals.
