BP is Back and Ready for the Future

Commenting on his retirement plans, Svanberg stated that it had been a tremendous privilege to lead the BP Board over the past eight years. Remembering the Deepwater Horizon disaster, he said that the first couple of years were incredibly challenging for the Company as it faced an unusually complex corporate crisis. However, even through that turbulent period, the management and the employees stayed focused on saving and restoring the Company.

Svanberg is confident that BP is back and ready for the future, and credited BP's Group Chief Executive, Bob Dudley, and his team for making it possible.

BP's Comeback Would Not Have Been Possible Without Svanberg's Strong Leadership

Dudley, for his part, expressed that BP's comeback would not have been possible without the strong leadership and steadfast support of Svanberg and the Board. Together, it was possible to honor the commitments to the Gulf while rebuilding BP into a safer and stronger Company. Dudley stated that Svanberg's wise counsel and good humor will be sorely missed.

Svanberg's Professional Background

Svanberg was appointed as the Chairman of BP in January 2010. He spent his early career at Asea Brown Boveri and the Securitas Group, before moving to the Assa Abloy Group as President and CEO. From 2003 to 2009, he served as President and CEO of Ericsson, also serving as the Chairman of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB. Svanberg was a non-executive Director of Ericsson from 2009 to 2012. In April 2012, he was appointed Chairman and a member of the Board of AB Volvo.

Presently, Svanberg is a member of the External Advisory Board of the Earth Institute at Columbia University and a member of the Advisory Board of Harvard Kennedy School. He also received the King of Sweden's medal for his contribution to the Swedish industry.
