Brill and Printforce win the Future Book Printing Innovation Award for pushing the boundaries of POD quality of unique, one-off copies.

Earlier this month, Brill and Printforce-Brill's print-on-demand (POD) supplier-were awarded the Future Book Printing Innovation Award for pushing the boundaries of POD quality of unique, one-off copies. The award was given at the 2015 Future Book Forum, organized by Canon, in Munich, Germany. Together, Brill and Printforce were one of four international candidates selected to present how they contributed to innovation in printing, where audience members then voted for most innovative showcase.

While POD technology continues to improve, great variation in quality and cost remain in the market. The presentation described how Printforce pushed itself to meet the high-quality demands of the Brill brand while maintaining a competitive cost and time-to-market. This ultimately enabled Brill, an academic publisher operating in a niche market, to produce 90% of new books and 99% of journal issues as print-to-order (PTO) copies.

'The collaboration with Printforce supported Brill to remain flexible and innovative,' said Emile Kranendonk, Team Leader Production & Distribution at Brill. 'It has never been a traditional buyer - supplier relationship, but always a partnership where we sit together to discuss and develop the highest quality products for our customers.'

'By really working together as partners, Printforce and Brill have realized impressive improvements in stock control, total cost of ownership and reliability,' said Rombout Eikelenboom, Managing Partner at Printforce.

Through standardization of Brill specifications and modifications by Printforce, the two were able to print an average print run of 1.6 copies. That means a great number of titles were uniquely printed, enabling Brill to continue to support the niche academic research fields it specializes in a cost efficient way.
