SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwired - Mar 3, 2015) - Blue Coat Systems, Inc., a market leader in enterprise security, today launched the Blue Coat Encrypted Traffic Management (ETM) Ready Certification Program. The ETM Ready Certification Program is designed to prepare Blue Coat Business Assurance Technology Partners to integrate interoperable SSL visibility solutions into the Blue Coat architecture, resulting in best-in-class security products to effectively detect, prevent and eliminate the hidden threats in encrypted traffic.

The use of encryption across a wide variety of websites -- both business and consumer -- is increasing as concerns around personal privacy grow. For example, Google, Amazon and Facebook have all switched to an "always on HTTPS" model to secure all data in transit using SSL encryption. This growing use of encryption to address privacy concerns is creating perfect conditions for cyber criminals to hide malware inside encrypted transactions. In addition, Blue Coat researchers have found that it often reduces the level of sophistication required for malware to avoid detection; thereby making it easier for malware to get onto the network.

"Protecting privacy while keeping an enterprise network safe can be tricky," said Jon Oltsik, senior principal analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group. "This certification program is a way to enable companies to achieve both security and privacy with proven security solutions that are well integrated; thereby providing an added benefit of a potential return on investment."

ETM Ready Certification enables Blue Coat technology partners to build solutions that combat security threats hidden in encrypted traffic, while preserving the ability of enterprise customers to manage privacy, policy and regulatory compliance. By integrating their products with the Blue Coat SSL Visibility Appliance, Blue Coat technology partners can offer solutions to detect, prevent and eliminate the hidden threats in encrypted traffic.

"The use of encryption is increasing to protect consumer privacy. While this is a great thing, we're already seeing malware hide behind encryption to evade detection, so it is crucial that we provide solutions that account for the needs of our enterprise customers to protect privacy while also shoring up a growing security vulnerability," said Peter Doggart, vice president of business development for Blue Coat. "Blue Coat is the trusted architecture for security to many of largest enterprises across the globe. The ETM Ready program continues to deliver on this mission by enabling top-tier companies to integrate with our architecture, producing solutions that protect networks while eliminating encrypted traffic blind spots. The ETM Ready program benefits all types of enterprises from financial institutions, healthcare organizations, government agencies, oil and gas producers, retailers, manufacturing and more."

CA Technologies
"Partnering is integral to doing business in the application economy and CA Technologies is committed to aligning with its partners to develop innovative solutions. As a founding member of Blue Coat's ETM Ready Certification Program, we look forward to collaborating for the success of our mutual customers in the marketplace."

 - Tony Jennings, Vice President, Global Technology Partners

Cyphort
"Customer privacy has been top of mind for website operators recently and has helped accelerate the adoption of the SSL protocol. While great for the consumer, it has created a blind spot for enterprise security solutions where activities of malicious actors can remain undetected. This partnership provides Cyphort Advanced Threat Defense Platform unprecedented visibility into the SSL encrypted traffic; thus unveiling any malicious activity that might have gone undetected otherwise."

 - Jeremy Carlson, Sr. Director, Business Development

Damballa
"Visibility into network communications is critical to unearthing hidden, compromised machines under a threat actor's control. Through partnering with Blue Coat ETM, Damballa Failsafe empowers organizations to discover malicious encrypted communications emanating from compromised machines, which would otherwise elude traditional defenses."

 - Stephen Newman, Vice President, Product Management

General Dynamics Fidelis Cybersecurity Solutions:
"Our customers have known for years how important it is to inspect encrypted traffic as part of a comprehensive approach to maintaining protocol-independent visibility and control over their data networks with the combination of Fidelis XPS and Blue Coat's SSL Visibility appliance. We are delighted to extend our partnership with Blue Coat as an inaugural participant in the ETM Ready program to continue helping customers thwart today's most advanced adversaries."

 - Will Irace, Vice President, Technology Alliances

Lastline
"The combination of Blue Coat's encrypted traffic management system and the Lastline Breach Detection Platform delivers a powerful new way to detect threats within SSL traffic while preserving privacy as well as policy and regulatory compliance. This is significant because more than half of enterprise applications today use SSL and encrypted traffic can create blind spots where advanced and evasive threats can hide."

 - Freddy Mangum, CMO, Lastline

RSA
"RSA is proud to be a founding ETM Ready partner with Bluecoat. This builds on a longstanding relationship between two enterprise security leaders and further enhances the value proposition for RSA® Security Analytics customers looking to leverage Bluecoat for encrypted traffic visibility."

 - Chad Loeven, Director Partnerships, RSA

Venafi
"The inability to inspect SSL/TLS encrypted traffic undermines traditional layered defenses and increases the risk of breach and data loss. Having automatic, secure access to all enterprise keys and digital certificates maximizes the amount of decrypted traffic and eliminates blind spots that are otherwise hidden in encrypted traffic. Not to mention it makes it incredibly easy to get started. Every extra key and certificate available for decryption means one less place for bad guys to hide, infiltrate your network, and steal data."

 - Kevin Bocek, Vice President of Security Strategy and Threat Intelligence

VSS Monitoring
"As cyber-crime and politically motivated cyber attacks increase risk online, we have seen encrypted traffic significantly increase within customers' networks as well. This change increases data security, but it poses simultaneous visibility challenges. We are pleased to partner with Blue Coat to provide a comprehensive, high-performance, and scalable network visibility solution. Our customers can examine clear-text and encrypted traffic from a unified system, allowing their security infrastructure to reduce the risk that bad actors can hide their attacks within SSL or TLS."

 - Andrew Harding, Vice President of Products & Marketing at VSS Monitoring
