Innovative new diesel products now available in the Hunter

04 August 2014

The Hunter Region's mining and commercial businesses will be the first in New South Wales to have access to a new range of Australian-developed diesel products specifically designed to boost engine power output and reduce fuel consumption.

Australia's leading fuel supplier, Caltex Australia, said upgrades completed this week on Caltex's Newcastle terminal enabled customers access to new fuel products that would help address a number of maintenance and performance challenges known to be contributing to higher costs of maintaining their diesel fleets.

Caltex General Manager Marketing Bruce Rosengarten said the package would assist commercial diesel customers across the Hunter in their efforts to reduce these costs.

"Caltex has responded to these challenges by introducing the Caltex TecDiesel Advantage, a holistic and cost-effective package that includes three new advanced diesel products, along with fuel filtering processes, site-specific engineering solutions and a fuel-saving low-viscosity engine oil," Mr Rosengarten said.

"Independent tests*, designed to replicate Australian conditions, demonstrated that the TecDiesel Advantage program delivers increased power output and potential fuel economy savings through improvements to injector cleanliness."

The suite of products and services have been designed to help reduce the likelihood of increased fuel consumption, reduced engine performance and significant repair bills associated with having to replace failed parts.

A diesel filtration system was installed at the Newcastle terminal to remove significantly more microscopic abrasive contamination compared to conventional diesel fuel.

*Australian tests - Orbital Corporation

Local independent testing, which was commissioned by Caltex Australia and conducted by Orbital Corporation in Western Australia, saw a six-cylinder common-rail Cummins QSK19 turbo-diesel engine operated using regular diesel and an accelerant to replicate a level of injector deposit build-up typical of longer-term engine operation. The engine's performance, power output, fuel flow and fuel consumption were measured throughout the process, with tests then showing up to 78% recovery in lost power output and complete restoration of lost fuel flow through the injectors when the same engine was operated using Caltex Active TecD. Injectors were also visibly cleaner when using the new product and their improved cleanliness was confirmed through restoration of fuel flow.
