Caltex Australia : investment to boost Victorian fuel supply reliability

Australia's only locally-owned and listed fuel company, Caltex Australia, will expand the capacity of the state's second-busiest fuel terminal.

Caltex Australia said upgrades to its Newport fuel terminal - due to be completed by the end of 2017 - would help the local company better manage its supplies to ensure it could meet growing demand for petrol, diesel and jet fuel from across the state.

The $75m project includes the installation of two new tanks, an additional 40ML of storage capacity, new pipes, pumping equipment, increased truck loading capacity and upgrades to the terminal's safety systems.

Caltex will also improve road safety for vehicles entering and exiting the site by building a new access point so heavy vehicles can avoid the known local blackspot on Douglas Parade.

Caltex Executive General Manager Supply Chain Operations Andrew Brewer said the Australian company had invested over $2 billion into its supply and retail infrastructure over the past five years.

Newport terminal history

Caltex Newport has been supplying Victoria with fuel since 1933. It stores and distributes regular unleaded petrol, premium unleaded petrol, diesel, premium diesel and jet fuel.

What does the upgrade involve?

The project work includes:

• Building two new storage tanks
• Installing new pumps, piping and automation
• Upgrades to the site's fire response systems
• Electrical infrastructure upgrades
• Construction of two additional pipe bridges, across Douglas Pde and Burleigh St
• Demolition of 15 small, disused tanks and three disused warehouses
• Construction of a new truck loading bay
• Road access changes allowing trucks to flow through the site safely and reduce any queues on Douglas Pde

What is the current tank capacity of the terminal and how will this change?

Current fuel capacity is 60 million litres. This will increase to 100 million litres once this expansion is complete.

When was the terminal expansion approved?

Caltex received approval from Hobson's Bay City Council for its Development Application in 2013. The expansion announced today is for stage one of that DA.

How will the terminal upgrade improve safety?

Once upgrades are complete, trucks will be able to access the terminal through a new, safer route from Burleigh St. Once loaded, trucks will exit the site via Douglas Pde. This new one-way route will eliminate the need for trucks to queue on Douglas Pde, a known blackspot.
