MINNEAPOLIS, March 14, 2014 - Niles Ford, a PhD graduate of Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), has been named chief of the Baltimore Fire Department. Ford earned a doctoral degree from Capella's School of Business and Technology. Ford, a career firefighter, began his work in public safety in 1991 as a dispatcher in Bessemer, Alabama. He became a firefighter a year later and rose to the rank of captain in Bessemer Fire & Rescue. From 2003 to 2007, Ford was deputy fire chief in Fulton County, Georgia; he then moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, to become its fire chief. Most recently, Ford was the city manager of Chamblee, Georgia, where he oversaw a $14 million budget.
"Capella helped me in my career by providing real-world experience. I wrote papers and conducted research to solve contemporary and specific organizational problems. It helped me during my time at Capella, but also now â€" the research and thought I put into my work carried me through to today," Ford said.
The Baltimore City Fire Department has over 1,700 members. They serve a geographic area of 81 square miles and a population of more than 640,000 residents. Ford started his position officially on Jan. 22, 2014.
