Carillion's Sustainability Report provides an annual update on progress against its challenging Sustainability 2020 public commitments which aim to help deliver benefits for society, the environment and to underpin business success.

For the first time, every target in the Report has been independently verified by Bureau Veritas and key achievements include:

  • Building Public Trust Award retained for an unprecedented third year in a row
  • A 31% reduction in Carillion's carbon footprint since 2011 and a near-perfect Carbon Disclosure Project score of 98A for tackling climate change
  • A £33.8m contribution to profit from sustainable actions and behaviours - one of the only UK companies to publish such a figure
  • 94% of waste diverted from landfill, and a 47% reduction in waste overall
  • Providing the 1000 work placement for people from disadvantaged groups, and helping the 400 person into a permanent job
  • The largest trainer and employer of construction apprentices in the UK, offering over 1,700 placements in 2015
  • Directing 58% of its total supplier spend at local and SME companies
  • Achieving a 40% reduction in operational water use since 2012

This year's report was launched at an event at the Library of Birmingham - one of Carillion's award-winning contracts which was an exemplary project demonstrating all aspects of sustainability in action.

Commenting on the report, Carillion Chief Executive Richard Howson said: 'Our sustainability leadership makes us a better business to invest in and work with. Just as importantly, it helps us to attract, develop and retain talented loyal people. This underpins our reputation as a service provider that can be trusted to deliver for the long term - not only for our shareholders but for the economies and communities of the countries we work in.'

Carillion Chief Sustainability Officer, David Picton said: 'Despite many different names for sustainability, one thread remains the same: businesses without visionary engagement, inspiring stories, responsible compliance or public trust are businesses without competitive futures. Our people and our partnerships continue to build a better business, connect a better society and create better environment.'

Carillion Chairman Philip Green said: 'Trust in business remains a challenge, but is vital to long-term success. I believe without doubt that our commitment to sustainability, safety, integrity and strong governance is key to maintaining that trust and fundamental to the significant contribution we make towards a better tomorrow.'
