The following table lists unplanned and planned production outages at U.S. refineries as reported by Dow Jones Newswires. The information is compiled from both official and unofficial refining sources and doesn't purport to be a comprehensive list.
HollyFrontier (>> HollyFrontier Corp) said Feb. 28 that first-quarter crude rates at its Artesia, N.M., refinery as it performs maintenance on hydrotreaters. The company will also perform a turnaround at the alkylation unit at its 135,000 barrel-a-day refinery in El Dorado, Kan., during the first quarter.
Chevron Corp. (>> Chevron Corporation) reported "low feed rates" and "unstability" Feb. 27 at its refinery in Richmond, Calif., according to a government document made public the following day. A Chevron spokesman declined to comment except that supply to customers was not interrupted.
Valero Energy Corp. (>> Valero Energy Corporation) reported a planned unit startup and "an unexpected trip" at its refiery in Benicia, Calif., according to a government filing made public Feb. 24. The events occurred on Feb. 22 and Feb. 23, according to Valero's filing with the California Emergency Management Agency.
Tesoro Cop. (>> Tesoro Corporation) returned its 58,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Salt Lake City, Utah, to normal operating rates after a small fire early Feb. 17 resulted in the shut down of a crude unit.
Hovensa L.L.C. on Feb. 21 said the shutdown of its 350,000-barrel-a-day refinery on the US Virgin Island of St. Croix had been completed. The complex will be operated as an oil storage terminal going forward.
Valero Energy Corp. (>> Valero Energy Corporation) said Feb. 21 that the coker and crude distillation units at its refinery in Wilmington, Calif., were at planned operating rates after coming down for maintenance in mid-January. Other units at the 135,000 barrel-a-day refinery were at various stages of the restart process, Valero spokesman said.
BP PLC (BP, BP.LN) said Feb. 18 it has idled operations at its Cherry Point refinery in Ferndale, Wash. as the company determines the condition of a crude unit that caught fire the previous day.
ConocoPhillips (>> ConocoPhillips) reported a plant upset Feb. 17 at its 240,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Westlake, La., according to a government filing. A company spokesman declined comment.
A platformer/reformer at North Atlantic Refining's 115,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Come By Chance, Newfoundland, Canada, has been returned to service after coming off line on Feb. 8, due to a brief fire, according to company spokeswoman Gloria Slade.
Alon USA's 67,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Big Spring, Texas, suffered another cooling tower leak on Feb. 14, resulting in the shutdown of the aromex unit until further notice, according to the Texas Commission On Environmental Quality.
ConocoPhillips (>> ConocoPhillips) is planning maintenance at it's 120,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Rodeo, Calif., according to the California Hazardous Materials Spill Report. The shutdown of the hydrogen unit was effective Feb. 16, and will last for approximately five weeks, according to local regulators.
A fluid catalytic cracker at Motiva's 325,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, was restarted on Feb. 16 and should be in full production within seven days, according to a filing to the Texas State environmental regulators. The unit experienced a power disruption on Feb. 8.
A key gasoline producing unit was taken off line on a planned basis at ExxonMobil's 345,000 barrel-a-day refinery in Beaumont, Texas, on Feb. 15, according to company spokeswoman Kathleen Jackson. Some impact to production will be evident, Jackson said.
Extensive planned maintenance on a crude unit, fluid catalytic cracker, and reformer still continues at Tesoro's 165,000 barrel-a-day refinery in the San Francico Bay Area after 45 days of work. Traders and marketers familiar with the facility on Feb. 16 said they believe work will be completed in short order, but Tesoro wouldn't comment.
