On December 25, a faster test train was launched at CSR. The launch of this sword-shaped train not only provides a test research platform for further enhancing the safety and reliability of bullet trains for commercial operations, but also marks a staged achievement in prospective researches on China's bullet trains, is of great importance to perfecting China's bullet train technology system, gaining greater say in China's high-speed railway field and promoting the development of world bullet train technology. 

As a "platform for engineering application and test of new technologies, new materials and new products", the faster test train project was deployed by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Railways in a scientific manner, was supported by the "Eleventh Five-Year National Technological Support Program" and the "National 973 Program", was spearheaded by CSR, was based on the open research platform of the national bulletin train powertrain engineering technology, adopted an innovative mode integrating production, teaching, research with application, and was wrapped up after more than two years' research. 

"This is a cutting-edge product independently and comprehensively innovated by CSR and adopting the international technical standard system. Its launch has not only led to the emergence of a new technical platform for faster bullet trains in China, but also laid a solid foundation for the globalization of bullet trains," said CSR's chief technical expert Ma Yunshuang. 

The train was developed level by level in accordance with a scientific and precise process, and went through massive data analysis, simulation computing, plan comparison, parts tests, system tests and inter-system matching tests. This January, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Railways jointly organized seven academicians and 14 industrial experts to review and adopt the overall plan and engineering technical plan for the faster test train. 

The train comprehensively innovated system integration, head, body, bogie, and tractive and braking systems on the basis of the innovation results of CRH380A, with the primary goal of safe and reliable high-speed operation and with focus on increasing critical speed, improving tractive capacity and reducing resistance. The key technologies of the train have accomplished automation and industrialization in CSR. According to Liang Jianying, deputy chief engineer of CSR, the train's launch was attributable to CSR's overall layout of bullet train R & D and the concerted efforts of research institutes such as the Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Academy of Railway Sciences, Southwest Jiaotong University, Beijing Jiaotong University and Tongji University. 

On the scene, the reporter saw the head and tail of the train in different shapes. The head is just like a hard-edged sword combining strength and beauty, and the tail follows the "rocket" shape of CRH380A. According to CSR's chief technical expert Ding Sansan, the technical plan for the head created an optimized head-tail combination of "sword" and "rocket" through intensive conceptual design, numerical simulation analysis and wind tunnel tests, thereby reducing head resistance and making tail lift close to zero. The head design was inspired by Chinese ancient weapon "sword" and highlights the wedge structure representing forging ahead. 

According to sources, the train has six power coaches, and its intelligence level, such as safety surveillance and failure diagnosis, has been improved. New technologies including Ethernet ring network control and wind resistance brake, as well as new materials such as carbon fiber, magnesium alloy and new nanometer sound-insulating materials were used successfully on the train. Guided by the concept of light and equal-strength design, the body increases rigidity by 22.7% while reducing weight. The bogie successfully solves more complex coupling relations among multiple systems due to the increase of speed through cyclic and optimal matching of system parameters, and is characterized by high speed, stability, reliability, lightness and low abrasion. The tractive system is a newly developed large-power tractive system, with a total tractive power of 22,800 kilowatts. 

Since 2004, through technology introduction, digestion, assimilation and renovation, China has established diverse bullet train technology platforms and formed bullet train series of different speeds. In December 2010, CSR-developed CRH380A set a world record of 486.1 kilometers in trial operation in the leading section of Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway. According to statistics, by November 2011, 278 CSR had put into operation 278 bullet trains, with a total safe operation mileage of 232 million kilometers, an average mileage of more than 830,000 kilometers and an average failure rate of only 0.7 time per 1 million kilometers. CSR has edged into the advanced ranks in the world in terms of the reliability of bullet trains. 

According to sources, CSR prepares to apply for more than 100 technical patents for the train. Next, CSR will conduct comprehensive bench tests at the national engineering laboratory of bullet trains, including dynamics, traction and network tests, especially rolling tests at ultra-high speed, thereby fully validating the security, reliability and other performance indicators of systems. Afterwards, the train will be put into online operation and used as a comprehensive high-speed test train for a long time, will become a mobile test platform for prospective technical researches on China's bullet trains and a comprehensive test platform for high-speed operation status of vehicles, lines and networks, and will conduct real-time tests of rail, contact lines, wheel rail dynamics, vehicle dynamic response and bogie load, to provide reliable guarantee for the sound, stable and comfortable operations of high-speed railways.
