Northland power outage - impact of telecommunications services

The power outage in Northland is affecting a wide geographic area.

Chorus has about 100 cabinets within the impacted area serving about 35,000 customers. Of these 100 cabinets, 30 are currently without power and their batteries have depleted. This means there are approximately 15,000 customers who will be without broadband and, in some cases, without a landline phone service.

The remaining cabinets are still running on their batteries but, given the outage occurred at 3am, they are well beyond expected battery capacity and are likely to drop out shortly.

Chorus is working with our service companies in the region to deploy generators to cabinets that service priority customers - medical centres, shopping areas and mobile cell sites. Transpower has said they expect the power to be back at around 4pm this afternoon, after which most services should self-restore.

There is no impact to services from an exchange as they each have fuel and battery back-up.
