Alberta  New  Unlocking  Rules  for  Financial  Hardship

Effective September 1, 2014, the Office of the Superintendent of Pensions will no longer be responsible for receiving and assessing requests to unlock money from Alberta locked-‐in accounts due to Financial  Hardship. As of September 1, 2014 individuals who wish to unlock money from Alberta locked-‐in accounts for reasons of Financial  Hardship will need to apply directly to the financial institution that holds the locked-‐in account(s).

Clients who wish to unlock funds held with CI Investments under Alberta's jurisdiction due to Financial  Hardship must complete the appropriate form in full, and submit the form along with any required supporting documentation to CI Investments for processing. Applications will be accepted via fax or mail. Advisors should follow the procedures outlined by their dealership, for Nominee (Intermediary) accounts, applications will be assessed and approved by the Nominee.

Applications must be made on Superintendent-‐approved forms, which will be issued by the Alberta Treasury Board and Finance each year and posted on the website each December.

The new unlocking user guide and forms can be found on the Alberta Treasury Board and Finance
website once available: http://www.finance.alberta.ca/business/pensions/

Note:Please follow the current process of submitting the 2014 unlocking forms to the Office of
