COPENHAGEN, DENMARK--(Marketwired - Jun 23, 2014) -  Today, Regional Council Chairman Carl Holst (V) and Vice President at Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) Hans Hwang signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will pave the way for more advanced video solutions in hospitals and mental health care facilities in the region of Southern Denmark. The use of video will enable more efficient patient engagements and improved patient experience and make the health care system in the region of Southern Denmark the most advanced of its kind in Denmark.

The memorandum aims to enable more telepsychiatry. For example, practitioners/doctors in the region of Southern Denmark will be able to conduct video consultations with psychiatric patients via the Internet. Citizens can be treated either in their own homes or at nearby psychiatric wards via videoconferencing, saving transportation time and creating a trusting environment where patients don't have to leave their own homes.

Hospitals are also planning to make use of new video solutions in the future. Video solutions will allow doctors and medical students to follow surgery and consultations and help provide better training for more effective treatment of patients, even when they are physically in a different part of the region.

Furthermore, the region of Southern Denmark will implement video solutions for optimizing performance, such as for meetings or multidisciplinary conferences in cancer treatment.

Future Health Care
"This memorandum with Cisco brings us a huge step closer to realizing the solutions needed in future health care. We now have Cisco as a partner, Cisco has extensive international experience in IT-infrastructure and digital solutions, and I am sure that the experience will be a great advantage for the region of Southern Denmark," stated regional council chairman Carl Holst.

"The region of Southern Denmark is already on the forefront of health care innovation, but with this Memorandum and the strategic decisions behind it, the region can become one of the most advanced health care operators in the entire Nordics. We are proud that Cisco, in cooperation with the region of Southern Denmark, can bring together people, processes, data and things through the power of the Internet of Everything to improve the way that health care services are delivered as well as the patient experience for the citizens in the region," said Hans Hwang, vice president of Cisco Advanced Services.

The five sub-projects covered by this Memorandum will all be developed and rolled out over the next six months. The projects will give the region of Southern Denmark knowledge about the requirements and functionalities that may be requested in connection with the provision of the solutions. In addition to video solutions, the Memorandum also contains a study of mobility solutions including development of the region's wireless network. The Memorandum also includes an overall plan for how IT can support the region's future challenges, such as how to improve safety and communication across the many clinics, hospitals and departments that span the region.
