CLP Young Power Programme Nurtures Future Energy Leaders

With its longstanding commitment to supporting youth education and development, CLP Holdings Limited (CLP) reactivated its Young Power Programme (YPP) this summer to promote understanding of energy and environmental issues among secondary youth in Hong Kong and Nanning, Guangxi. The wining team of a project competition that had concluded the Nanning chapter on 11 July joined a finale for the Hong Kong chapter today to share their counterparts' learning results.
"It is great to see first hand the results of our Young Power Programme. We have nurtured a group of enthusiastic youth who appreciate the energy challenges and are inspired to make a difference starting from their homes and schools. This is very much in line with our commitment to educate young people on energy efficiency and conservation," remarked Ms Quince Chong, Chief Corporate Development Officer of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, at the finale.
In late July, 80 students from 20 secondary schools in Hong Kong were taken on a four- day learning tour covering visits to CLP's power generation facilities, energy efficiency and smart grid centres as well as electricity control rooms. The students also had chance to attend seminars conducted by energy experts and scholars on the principium behind electricity supply, the importance of energy conservation and how the use of different energy sources will impact the society today and in the future.
Mr SH Chan, JP, Managing Director - China of CLP Holdings Limited, said, "We are pleased that this year's programme also benefited students in Guangxi, where one of our most significant investments in Mainland China is located. The winning students from Hong Kong and Nanning will be engaged in a series of exchange activities starting today. I hope they will take chance to share with each other their aspirations for the sustainable
development of the two locations."

To reinforce learning experiences, students of the Hong Kong chapter were divided into groups to develop projects on three topics - designing a school-based energy efficiency and conservation programme, explaining nuclear power generation in a creative way and proposing a suitable fuel mix for Hong Kong.
The judges, deeply impressed with the students' potential to become future energy leaders, chose a champion and two merit awards from the outstanding presentations. Students of the champion team will join the winning team from Nanning for a development and leadership training programme in Hong Kong.

About CLP Young Power Programme

YPP was launched in 1999 with an aim to promote environmental awareness and a sense of social responsibility among Hong Kong's young generation. YPP provides learning experience outside traditional classroom, and offers a platform for the youngsters to develop their career aspirations, creativity, teamwork, leadership skills, and sense of social responsibility and sustainable development.
In 2009, YPP was taken forward to Asia Pacific Region to reach out more youngsters in
Hong Kong, India and the Mainland China.
In 2014, YPP was reactivated in Hong Kong and Nanning, inviting 126 high school students from the two cities to participate in a series of thematic learning activities to enhance their energy literacy and interest in environmental issues, and inspire a multi- angle analysis on the energy issues.
