Johannesburg, 18 April 2016; Comair implemented a defensive lock-out of its airport staff, who have been on strike since Wednesday, 13 April 2016, when employees, represented by the trade union, United Association of South Africa (UASA), laid down tools at 16:40. The lock-out was effective Sunday, 17 April 2016.

On Monday, 18 April, UASA the Union approached the South African Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) for an urgent Section 150 intervention. The parties will now meet Tuesday, 19 April 2016.

Around 40% of the airport staff complement is taking part in the industrial action. Some members have been picketing at the Company's head office in Bonaero Park as well as at the Cape Town and Port Elizabeth International Airports.

'Operations are still running smoothly, despite the continued industrial action by members represented by the trade union. We have received phenomenal support from across the business to ensure it is business as usual', Erik Venter, Comair's CEO, says.

Venter continues, 'A huge contributing fact to our flights leaving on-time, is our customers. Customers are arriving at the airport early, already checked in online with their home printed boarding pass - only needing to drop their bags at the bag drop counters. We appeal to our customers to continue making use of our online facilities and to check in online.'
