Community Health Systems, Inc. (NYSE: CYH) announced today that 106 of its affiliated hospitals have been recognized as Top Performers on Key Quality Measures® by The Joint Commission, a leading accrediting agency for healthcare organizations.

The Joint Commission recognized 1,224 hospitals, or approximately one-third of the eligible U.S. hospitals, for exemplary performance in using clinical processes shown to improve outcomes for patients with certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, stroke, venous thromboembolism and perinatal care, as well as for inpatient psychiatric services and immunizations.

Of the 106 CHS-affiliated hospitals recognized this year, 87 have appeared on the list more than once. Of the 147 hospitals nationwide that have achieved the Top Performer recognition for four consecutive years, 33 are affiliated with Community Health Systems.

“Across our organization, our affiliated hospitals are following scientific, evidence-based clinical practices that lead to better outcomes,” said Wayne T. Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of Community Health Systems, Inc. “We congratulate the dedicated physicians, nurses, other caregivers and support staff who are committed to clinical excellence as they provide quality, safe and effective healthcare for their patients.”

Top Performers were required to meet three stringent performance criteria based on 2013 accountability measure data:

  • Achieving cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures;
  • Achieving performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure where there were at least 30 denominator cases; and
  • Having at least one core measure set that had a composite rate of 95 percent or above, and (within that measure set) all applicable individual accountability measures had a performance rate of 95 percent or above.
