Litchfield City officials are excited about a new Consumers Energy substation that should meet the city's electrical needs for years to come.

The new Ash Road substation is under construction just off Herring Road, and should not only meet the energy needs of residents, but of the city's expanding industrial park tenants. It will be the city's second substation, joining the Mill Street facility, and should be operational by June 1.

Substations transform incoming electricity into smaller units that can be distributed to individual homes and businesses.

"As our industrial park has expanded, it has outgrown the energy supply," said City Manager Doug Terry. "This new facility will meet the present and future needs of residents and industrial park manufacturers.

"Now we see fluctuations in voltage levels and inadequate voltage levels. When finished, residents should notice lights that don't blink and dim, and motors that runs more consistently."

"The new substation will increase electrical capacity and improve reliability for commercial and residential users in the area," said Terry DeDoes, Consumers Energy spokesman. "With two sources of electricity, there are more options if there is an outage, which should shorten interruption of services."

Terry said the need for an additional substation will become more urgent when a new expansion is completed at Hi-Lex in the industrial park. The new facility is expected to require significant quantities of energy to operate large pieces of heavy equipment.

"Electricity is always a critical component for manufacturers," Terry said. "The Hi-Lex addition puts us over the top. Consumers recognized that the existing power available is not enough."

The industrial park will also receive new power lines to handle the larger volumes of electricity.
