Hanover, May 28, 2014. Running costs have been a worry for transport companies in the people and goods segment over the last few years, as countless surveys show. Cutting expenses has become the single-most important factor for success in the field. With its tire pressure monitoring system, ContiPressureCheck™, Continental is helping transportation companies get to grips with their costs - because incorrect tire pressure is responsible for huge additional expenses.

Even if just slightly underinflated, the flexing of a tire increases significantly, shortening the tire life. On average, commercial vehicles on the road are approximately 12 percent underinflated. In the majority of cases this is gradual, and is the cause of more than 90% of all punctures. However, if the pressure in the tire is too high, this increases wear or makes the tire wear unevenly, which also results in the tire having to be replaced prematurely. Low tire service lives quickly lead to additional expenditure for fleet operators amounting to several tens of thousands of euros, depending on fleet size. Optimal tire pressure also ensures that casings retain their retreadability, and therefore their value.

Increased rolling resistance due to underinflated tires results in additional fuels costs, as Continental's calculations for heavy trucks show. At a diesel price of around €1.30 per liter, this adds up to €1,000 per year for each vehicle.

ContiPressureCheck can help prevent unnecessary additional costs. The system provides precise data on tire pressure and temperature, and is a valuable indicator for efficient fuel and tire management in the fleet. It enables the driver to monitor tire condition in real time, and to react quickly if there is a deviation from the defined value. The system comprises one transmitter 2-cm long and weighing less than 20 grams including sensors, and a processor, which is affixed to the inside of the tire tread in a rubber bracket. When the tire is changed, it can be removed from the bracket and reused in the new tire. The battery lasts six years, or approx. 600,000 km. The system also includes a receiver installed in the vehicle frame and a display in the cab. ContiPressureCheck works with all tire brands and all vehicles.

Herbert Mensching, Director of Marketing and Sales for Truck Tires for Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA): "With ContiPressureCheck haulers can save hard cash because tire service life is maximized while fuel consumption is minimized. So it's not surprising that ContiPressureCheck is seeing such an extraordinarily high level of market acceptance. We are delighted with the consistently positive feedback we have received from customers in countries across the world regarding the practicality of ContiPressureCheck".
