Conversant (NASDAQ:CNVR) and its premium video media solutions group, SET by Conversant, today announced it has been awarded Best Paper for Storytelling with Images and Videos (VisStory) for its paper entitled “Unsupervised Summarization from Simultaneous Egocentric Videos,” at the ECCV 2014 in Zurich, Switzerland. The award-winning paper highlights pioneering research that Conversant is delivering in the field of computer vision.

SET by Conversant’s contextual video classification and targeting systems recognize faces, activities and objects in videos. Due to the growing number of mobile video cameras and the emergence of social networking, video data is expanding in volume and is becoming richer in representation. The 1st VisStory workshop at the ECCV recognized this trend and invited researchers and thought leaders to find solutions addressing the visualization, exploration, and semantic comprehension of visual data.

The research paper focuses on analyzing simultaneous egocentric video feeds taken with wearable cameras—a growing product category with different use cases from sports to life logging. The market size of wearable cameras is forecasted to sell up to 63 million units in 2016, according to Seeking Alpha, the online investment research platform.

“Previous summarization work was focused on supervised algorithms that are mostly driven by people and objects in the video, or unsupervised motion feature analysis,” explains Conversant’s Director of Engineering, Computer Vision and Media Technology, Carolina Galleguillos. “The unsupervised approach combines several image cues such as scene description, color distribution, the presence of people and objects, and motion analysis to find the most informative frames from a set of egocentric videos.”

Experiments conducted for this paper show that by combining different egocentric perspectives, the result is a more meaningful and representative description of the activities performed in the videos. Conversant is currently working to apply the unsupervised summarization for videos taken with wearable cameras to all applicable videos in their inventory pool.
