Costain : “Do As Best As You Can To Push Yourself And Boundaries”

Bond Street Station Site Agent, Stefan Murray has gone down in the history books as the current youngest Chartered Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He qualified this year as a Chartered Professional after completing Costain's Further Learning Programme (FLP). Over the years, he has worked across sectors in design and construction roles.

It is really humbling to achieve this so early in my career. It gives me confidence knowing that the work I had been doing has allowed me to achieve such a standard. I applied to take the Chartered Professional Review when I was 25.

I joined as a graduate with an ambition to lead and deliver infrastructure projects. Through the training and development from our Graduate Programme and FLP, I was able to achieve this professional acknowledgement of hard work in four years.

All of our best individual achievements require significant time, effort and care. I chose not to be defined by the status quo. There was no reason to slow down because no one had achieved it before. I had a strong desire to achieve my target and worked to a rigorous plan. I believe current parameters can always be improved and beaten. This has galvanised me to achieve more.

Costain has been fantastic in helping me to realise my ambition. I was fortunate to have great line managers and a fantastic mentor who provided me with a platform to show my competence within the business. This is a celebration of all the colleagues, clients and Costain as a company that tries to develop the best in people.

There has been a quicker rate of responsibility since getting chartered. Being a chartered engineer supported my application for the Emerging Leaders Programme. This has created more avenues to pursue my career goals in.

My career so far has been challenging but also impactful. It helps knowing a meaningful difference has been made to the local community and wellbeing of the end users as the stakeholders are important.

There were sacrifices involved along the way. Doing the FLP whilst working towards getting chartered requires significant effort and many nights in. However, I always tried to remain a balance of some sort making time to spend with my family and relax with a game of basketball.
