RMS

On the Reactions website, Garry Booth is discussing the introduction by RMS of its Cat-in-a-Box app, which operates on the RMS Miu Insights web platform. He explains that Cat-in-a-Box deals are so called because they provide cover for a particular type of catastrophe in a given geographical 'box', and are attractive to buyers of protection because they provide quick payment when it's most needed, without a drawn out claims process. Businesses may benefit from a capital injection immediately after an event to help mitigate the financial effect of a break in the supply chain - Sony, Honda and Toyota all had to suspend operations after the recent Japanese earthquake hit the manufacturing hub of Kumamoto. Perhaps, Booth writes, this is a more elegant solution for all parties.

A grounded 12,500 TEU container ship MSC Fabiola is continuing on its journey down the Suez Canal after being refloated in the early hours of Saturday 30 April. Mark Deverill, Director of Maritime Data for Genscape, commented in a blog post: 'if the canal is blocked for a long period, then the alternative route between Europe and Asia involves going around the Cape of Good Hope, adding over 4,000 miles to the voyage to most European ports... it is evident that there are long delays and high costs involved in not using the canal.'

With pipeline capacity from the Bakken region having expanded substantially, North Dakota producers are looking for flexibility in sending barrels to market, using pipeline capacity as a first option and rail in times of arbitrage incentive. Genscape's Bakken Beaver Lodge assessments will be published daily in Genscape's PetroRail Daily Bakken Update publication, and weekly on Tuesdays in the PetroRail publication, alongside pertinent regional pipeline flow and crude loading data.
