Stuttgart. Not only does the calendar indicates spring has arrived, after a mild winter in Germany, daytime temperatures have long been reaching double figures. As soon as they are consistently above 10 degrees Celsius it is time to change over to summer tyres. And it's a good time to upgrade with a set of attractive light-alloy wheels. Mercedes-Benz Accessories is now presenting a variety of new wheels, some of them in a sporty 19" with a high-sheen finish for many current model series.

Light-alloy wheels with a high-sheen finish derive their additional attractiveness from the interesting contrast between the seemingly bare metal surface and the painted areas. They give the vehicle an even more exclusive appearance and, in the view of Mercedes-Benz designers, are more than just a passing fashion trend.

However, Mercedes-Benz light-alloy wheels not only make the vehicle look more exclusive, they also offer an extremely high level of safety. All the wheels are precisely configured for the vehicle models with respect to permissible loads and dimensions. Before these light-alloy wheels were allowed to become reliable companions on every journey, they go through an extensive development and testing programme. Every wheel design must pass a wide variety of endurance tests according to stringent Mercedes-Benz guidelines that go beyond the legal requirements. These include special test procedures that simulate the loads encountered in real traffic situations, as well as material tests using the latest X-ray equipment. High-sheen wheels are subjected to additional tests such as highly corrosive salt-water spray or a 28-day climate cycle. Only when they have passed all the tests are the wheels included in the range of genuine Mercedes-Benz light-alloy wheels.

Using the accessories configurator on the website www.mercedes-benz.de, suitable wheels and the correct tyre size can be found for practically any Mercedes-Benz. All Mercedes-Benz sales partners will be pleased to advise and help customers find the right tyres that best suit their Mercedes-Benz. The ideal combinations were established during stringent tests together with leading tyre manufacturers. The more precisely the wheels and tyres are coordinated, the better the rolling and wear characteristics.

The light-alloy wheels and suitable tyres are available from Mercedes-Benz partners.

Continuous check: tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS)

As of the 1st of November .2014 every newly registered vehicle must be equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system. Since the beginning of 2014, Mercedes-Benz models X156, W205, 217 and W222 have already been equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system as standard equippment. As of June 2014, all models will be changed over to a tyre pressure monitoring system. All Mercedes-Benz vehicles will then be equipped with a direct tyre pressure system. This means that a sensor is installed at each wheel to continuously measure the air pressure and pass the information on to the onboard receiver system by radio signal. The system shows the air pressure at each individual wheel, and immediately reports any change in the pressures.

Protecting the wheels from theft and dirt: Rim locks and hub caps

Mercedes-Benz rim locks are available to protect the valuable light-alloy wheels against theft. The set consisting of four rim locks and a key comes in a practical box. The set of trim locks (starting at € 66[2]) is available in black or silver to suit the genuine Mercedes-Benz wheels.

The hub caps from Mercedes-Benz are not only stylish, but also protect the wheel hubs against soiling. The hub caps bearing the Mercedes star are available in various versions, also in matt black, from € 3.50 to € 302, and are suitable for all Mercedes-Benz wheels.

Visual enhancement: Valve caps

Small feature with a big effect, the new genuine Mercedes-Benz valve caps are a visual embellishment with a striking design that suits all genuine Mercedes-Benz light-alloy wheels. They are chrome-plated and bear a silver Mercedes-Benz star on a black background at the top. Knurling along the side makes them easier to tighten and unscrew. The valve caps have no shaft and are therefore suitable for all valve types, i.e. vehicles with or without a tyre pressure monitoring system. The valve caps are supplied as a set of 4 in an attractive package (€ 10.902).

Hints for the care and treatment of wheels

How well wheels are treated has a major effect on their value retention, and also on the safety of the vehicle. Useful hints:

  • After changing the wheels in the spring, thoroughly clean the winter wheels whether they are of steel or light-alloy.

  • Do not use abrasive cleaning agents. The products recommended by Mercedes-Benz will clean the wheels gently and effectively.

  • Do not use rough or abrasive sponges for cleaning wheels.

  • Observe the specified wheel tightening torques. Tightening the wheel bolts too much, or not enough, can damage the wheel over time.

  • Do not oil or grease the wheel bolts, since the initial stress will be higher than the specified tightening torques and could damage both the wheel and the bolts.

  • Use only genuine Mercedes-Benz wheel bolts.

  • Check the wheels if they are subjected to a heavy impact, e.g. driving over deep potholes. If there is visible deformation, it is essential to have the damage checked by a dealer.

  • Only fit tyres of the size permitted for the wheel.

When driving with a heavy load and/or a trailer, adjust tyre pressure accordingly and observe the permitted wheel loads.
