The new £10 note, featuring the novelist Jane Austen, has been unveiled today by the Bank of England in a ceremony at Winchester Cathedral.

It has been designed and printed by De La Rue, the world's largest commercial producer of banknotes and passports. The talented artistic team turned a well-known portrait of the author into the image on the note.

This is the first time a Bank of England banknote includes a specific tactile feature to help blind and partially sighted people to identify the notes. De La Rueworked closely with the Bank of England to develop this new feature for the £10 note. This is in addition to the elements already incorporated into their banknotes for vision impaired people, such as bold numerals, different colours and sizing.

Martin Sutherland, the Chief Executive of De La Rue, said:

'We are proud of our on-going partnership with the Bank of England, and delighted to have been closely involved in the development of the new £10.

'We are a great British business and creating symbols of national pride - be they in currency or passports - is at the heart of what we do. This new note celebrates the life and work of Jane Austen, a fitting tribute in this, the 200 anniversary of her death.'

Commenting at the launch, Chief Cashier of the Bank, Victoria Cleland said:

'The new Jane Austen £10 note marks the next exciting step in the Bank of England's move to cleaner, safer, stronger polymer banknotes.

'We have been working extensively with all our stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition and I look forward to the public being able to use these new notes from September. I am grateful to the De La Rueteam for their help in the process.'
