The days are getting shorter, and the thermometer is dropping. Especially for new drivers looking forward to their first winter behind the wheel, the sudden onset of snowy and icy roads can be a real challenge. In winter weather above all, the correct tread depth is crucial for safe driving. The legal minimum throughout Europe is 1.6 mm, however experts recommend at least 4 mm in snowy and icy conditions to ensure sufficient grip. To measure your tyre’s tread depth, simply take a two euro coin: the coin’s silver band is exactly 4 mm wide – if you can see sliver when you place the coin in the tread, then it’s time to change your tyres.

Tyre pressure also plays an important role. In winter, sudden temperature drops can often lead to a loss of tyre pressure. This affects tyre grip and driving stability, and increases fuel consumption. This is why we recommend increasing your tyre pressure by 0.2 bar – you can find the recommended values for your car in the instruction manual.

It can also depend on the tyres themselves. “Winter tyres aren’t all the same. The M+S designation (mud and snow) on the side of the tyre is generally a sign that it is suitable for snowy conditions. In addition, you should look out for the snowflake symbol. This shows that under standard test conditions, the tyre performed better than average on winter roads. That way, you’re on the safe side,” explains Thierry Delesalle from Tirendo. “Of course, it is also essential to adjust your driving style to the conditions, as in addition to ice and snow, wet autumn leaves on the road can also lead to involuntary skids. Sharp acceleration and sudden braking should be avoided, as should driving too fast or too close to the car in front.”
