• Integrated graphics processors for high-performance applications
  • Managed service packages for public cloud
  • Public cloud services now also from data center in Singapore

With a number of new flavors, bare machines ¬- bare metal - and cost-effective storage, Deutsche Telekom is expanding its public cloud offerings in the Open Telekom Cloud. In addition to the new infrastructure offerings, companies can now also book support packages that go far beyond the free service.

Each of the five high-performance flavors (4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 vCPUs) now has two 'siblings', with twice and four times the main memory, respectively. Moreover, two additional flavors with 12 vCPUs use InfiniBand, a high-speed data transmission technology. The virtual machines are connected to the network with 100 Gbps and enable data transfer with an extremely low latency of less than 2 microseconds.

An alternative to the classic high performance flavors is virtual machines with integrated GPUs (graphics processing units). They use pass-through technology that makes it possible to address and use all 2048 signal processors of a GPU individually. These new flavors are ideal for high-performance applications such as simulation, crash testing, CAD and weather forecasting, as well as complex calculations in the insurance and financial sectors.

Bare metal from the cloud

The Open Telekom Cloud now also features bare metal resources: machines with an extremely lean operating system (or none at all). These machines have no need for a hypervisor or virtualization and give users full control and independence from defined flavors. In return, users can capture the full performance of the machines and design their own. Bare metal resources are ideal for complex big data applications, among other use cases, because they can achieve calculation speeds much higher than virtual machines with preconfigured flavors. Additional benefits can be derived from the software licensing model.

Storage: cold, warm or hot

The Open Telekom Cloud now also offers new object storage systems (OBS): 'warm' and 'cold' variants are joining the existing 'hot' standard. These variants are suitable for archiving data that is only needed occasionally or only in exceptional cases, and cut costs compared to the hot variant. 'Cold' storage is for data that users only need once per year. It is staged on cost-effective storage media. 'Warm' storage is suitable for data that companies need monthly. Open Telekom Cloud customers can decide for themselves which storage model they want to use for which data.

Enterprise services: Silver, Gold and Platinum

The new support packages offer additional services to Open Telekom Cloud users. The three service levels - Silver, Gold and Platinum - guarantee quick assistance whenever it is needed and also enable direct contact to OpenStack experts. Open Telekom Cloud customers who want to distribute the costs for their cloud services to multiple cost centers can use the tag management service, which lets admins assign up to ten tags to a virtual machine, such as organizational units or projects. The tags make it possible for companies to allocate and settle the VMs internally.

Open Telekom goes Asia

The Open Telekom Cloud is expanding its coverage to Asia. T-Systems has launched its public cloud platform at a data center in Singapore. Companies that are active in both European and South-East Asian markets now have a 'cloud bridge' between two of the world's most significant economic regions. The Open Telekom Cloud offers cloud services under the highest standards for companies in the region that have to satisfy high data privacy and compliance requirements.
