• Deutsche Telekom now fitting out the business parks in the Port of Hamburg with fiber-optic lines with speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s
  • More than 80 kilometers of optical fiber with 28 distribution cabinets
  • Fast broadband to be provided to almost 1000 businesses by Q2 2019

At an official ground-breaking ceremony, Frank Horch, Hamburg's regional minister for economy, transport and innovation, Dirk Wössner, Board of Management member for Germany, and Jens Meier, CEO of Hamburg Port Authority together marked the start of work on the fiber-optic build-out of Hamburg's business parks. Work is now underway in the port area of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The enterprises and business operations based in the area will be connected up by Deutsche Telekom to fiber-optic lines working at the very highest transmission speeds. Almost 1,000 businesses will be in a position to use fiber-optic lines with speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s.

'Among the federal states, Hamburg is already taking on a leading role in the provision with digital infrastructure. Fiber-optic connectivity is no longer just a vision for our city: it's a reality. The on-going expansion needs to make quick progress. Business parks and the Port area are particularly important in this effort to ensure that Hamburg remains an ultra-modern, highly future-ready business and industrial location. We welcome the fact that Deutsche Telekom too is driving on with the fiber-optic build-out in Hamburg,' says Frank Horch, the Hanseatic City's minister for economy, transport and innovation.

'The building work is now underway,' says Dirk Wössner on the start of the fiber-optic upgrade for Hamburg's business parks. 'We're driving the upgrade to a high-end digital infrastructure and the businesses located at the Port of Hamburg are telling us that they need that infrastructure. That's why we're delighted to be able to offer them fiber-optic lines of the highest quality. As a gateway to the world, the Port of Hamburg is a very special location with a long tradition that plays host to a great many successful businesses. We intend to strengthen its position further, with special emphasis on helping them respond to the challenges of the future!'

Interest in our offerings was very strong in the port districts of Stenzelring I and II, auf der Peute and Kleiner Grasbrook;. For that reason, those areas will be connected up in the first phase of construction.

'The digital revolution is the most important future megatrend facing the Port of Hamburg. Fast and secure data lines provide the spinal cord that will allow our businesses to take full advantage of the potentials available to them,' says Jens Meier, CEO of Hamburg Port Authority. 'I'm delighted that the upgrading to a state-of-the-art fiber-optic network is now set to provide the very best conditions for the digitalization process. It's going to benefit the entire Port area.'

The fiber-optic offering will range from asymmetric 100 Mbit/s business customer lines to symmetric 1 Gbit/s lines - with all lines promising the very top quality for business customers. Deutsche Telekom will be connecting each business location directly to the fiber-optic network. The effort will involve laying more than 80 kilometers of fiber-optical cabling and installing 28 distribution cabinets. Companies that have decided early to switch to Deutsche Telekom's fiber-optic network in Hamburg business parks will be connected at no additional charge.

Outside the Port area too, we have already successfully completed our marketing effort for fiber-optic lines in three other business parks in Hamburg. Deutsche Telekom fiber-optics are also set to be laid down in the business parks of Grossmoorring, Am Neumarkt and Heegbarg.

The expansion in the Port of Hamburg is part of a Deutsche Telekom program that was launched in 2017. By 2022, Europe's largest telecommunications company will be investing more than two billion euros in the expansion of fiber optics in industrial parks. After that, 3000 industrial estates with a total of 400,000 companies and businesses will be completely connected with fibre.

Deutsche Telekom's network in figures

Deutsche Telekom plans to lay 60,000 kilometers of optical fiber in 2018. For comparison: In 2017 it laid 40,000 kilometers. Telekom's full fiber-optic network measures 455,000 kilometers and is the largest in Europe. It would wrap around the Earth ten times. It costs between 50,000 and 150,000 euros to lay a kilometer of optical fiber cable. Deutsche Telekom invests around five billion euros per year in Germany.
