'My Brother's Keeper Initiative' Wins for Best Community Relations Program

Discovery Education's Science Techbook™ Wins for Best Education Materials

SILVER SPRING, MD. (June 22, 2016)- During a dinner ceremony on Tuesday, the Association of Cable Communicators (ACC) announced Discovery Communications and Discovery Education winners of the 2016 Beacon Awards®, honoring excellence in cable communications and public affairs. Discovery Communications won for Best Community Relations Program and Discovery Education won for Best Education Materials. Discovery Education was also named a finalist for the Golden Beacon Award, the ACC's highest honor, as well as a finalist for both Education Comprehensive Campaign and Website categories.

Discovery Communications' winning entry in the 'Community Relations' category is for its support of the My Brother's Keeper Initiative, a White House program that seeks to improve the expected life outcomes of boys and men of color. Using the power of media to change the perception of young men of color, Discovery Communications committed more than $1 million to produce and air a one-hour TV special - RISE: THE PROMISE OF MY BROTHER'S KEEPER - and to host local town hall meetings and screenings of the TV special in partnership with minority non-profits to discuss stories of intervention and ways that communities can get involved.

Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-based digital content for K-12, won the 'Educational Materials' category for its Science Techbook™, a breakthrough digital textbook that offers rich, standards-aligned content. Science Techbook includes video clips, hands-on activities, virtual labs, and an interactive glossary, along with features that adapt text to students' reading level and enable text to be read aloud. The series can work on any device and updates regularly, allowing educators to incorporate cutting-edge advancements and current issues into classroom instruction. Science Techbook was also named one of three finalists for the Golden Beacon, the ACC's highest honor that spans all 44 categories.

Additionally, Discovery Education, in partnership with EA SPORTS and the NFL Players Association, was named a finalist in the 'Education Comprehensive Campaign' category for its Madden NFL: Football by the Numbers initiative. This program offers a first-of-its-kind digital interactive game that teaches students key math and science concepts through real-world football scenarios seen in Madden NFL highlights, as well as introduces students to career paths available in the video game industry.

In partnership with the Alcoa Foundation, Discovery Education was also named a finalist in the 'Website' category for its Manufacture Your Future online portal. Designed to spark students' interest in advanced manufacturing careers, Manufacture Your Future offers students, educators, and families digital resources around opportunities in this growing field.

ACC members chose the 2016 Beacon Award winners during an extensive two-round judging process. The high-quality Beacon Award entries submitted this year continue to demonstrate the cable industry's commitment to communications and public affairs and represent company initiatives implemented over the past year in areas such as events and observances, integrated communications and Web sites.
