PURINZE™ Ultrafiltration Technology recognized for reducing water consumption and removing bacteria in washing machine Edina, MN - 11/17/2015

R&D Magazine, one of the most respected publications in the R&D industry, honored Dow Water & Process Solutions, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), with a Silver Special Recognition Award for bringing a sustainable innovation to the home appliance industry.

Recognized for its application in the Haier Group's Casarte eco-friendly washing machine, PURINZE™ Ultrafiltration (UF) Technology won Silver in the Special Recognition Green Tech category for its excellent filtration performance, addressing water scarcity issues. Used in the Haier Casarte washing machine, the PURINZE™ UF module facilitates more than 30 percent reduction in water consumption while improving water quality by removing as much as 99 percent of common bacteria.1

The Green Tech Special Recognition Awards is a separate award established by R&D Magazine to particularly recognize innovations that help society reduce its footprint by increasing efficiency and reducing energy consumption.

'We are delighted to have our innovation for water conservation and bacteria removal recognized by R&D Magazine,' said Snehal Desai, global business director for Dow Water & Process Solutions. 'Applying ultrafiltration technology to a washing machine is an industry first, and an award like the R&D Green Tech Special Recognition helps to greatly increase the awareness of the impact innovations can make in a water-stressed world.'

The PURINZE™ UF module runs continuously during washing, and, based on testing performed by Casarte, can last as long as the lifetime of the washing machine. The module allows water molecules to pass through while blocking bacteria and mites2 as well as other dirt and contaminants from the water.

'By putting the game-changing PURINZE™ UF Technology into a consumer product such as the washing machine, Dow has empowered more people to play a role in sustainable resource use,' said Desai. 'We are indeed developing influential innovations that will help enable human progress.'

PURINZE™ UF Technology joins six other technologies from Dow honored by R&D Magazine this year.

1 Bacteria testing done by China Testing & Inspection Institute for Household Electric Appliances
2 Mite testing done by China's National Institute of Parasitic Diseases, Center For Disease Control & Prevention
