GROSSE POINTE SHORES, Mich. -- DTE Energy crews are working in Grosse Pointe Woods, Grosse Pointe Shores and Harper Woods to continue the pipeline replacement program the company launched earlier this year to ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of its natural gas infrastructure.

The DTE program involves replacing aging natural gas infrastructure - mainly cast iron mains, and steel or copper service lines that deliver natural gas from the gas mains to homes and businesses. DTE also is upgrading the natural gas meters with the latest technology and relocating the equipment to the outside of homes.

The new meter technology also will provide these benefits:

  • Improved response time
  • Virtual elimination of estimated bills
  • No need for crews to enter homes for maintenance work

In Grosse Pointe Woods and Shores, DTE crews have been working street by street in an area bounded by 8 Mile Road, Lake Shore Drive, Lochmoor and I-94/Harper.

Crews now are working on Fleetwood Drive, Beaufait Avenue, Mack, Vernier, Jackson and Oxford streets, and Lake Shore Road. Natural gas infrastructure work is complete on Severn Street, Van Antwerp Avenue, Country Club Drive, Helen Street and Lennon Avenue, and restoration of yards and streets is ongoing. Mack and Vernier are expected to be completed in late June.

In Harper Woods, crews are working on 8 Mile Road, Harper, Vernier, Fleetwood, Hampton, Hawthorne, Anita, Hunt Club, Lancaster, Lennon, Lochmoor, Kenmore and Norwood streets. Work is complete on Country Club Drive.

'The work is important for the long-term safety and reliability of the natural gas distribution system,' said Joi Harris, DTE vice president, Gas Operations. 'We have served the area for several decades and it's time for our gas infrastructure to be renewed. A smarter, up-to-date infrastructure gives customers reliability, control, flexibility and choice in how they manage their energy.'

DTE will need customers' continued cooperation to complete the work. Appointments will be scheduled for DTE crews to move meters to the outside of homes and businesses. DTE commits to restore driveways, sidewalks and lawns to their original condition if damaged by construction work.

Customers with questions or concerns about the restoration of their property, scheduling, meter locations, or who wish to provide feedback on the program, can call 313.256.6227. Calls after normal business hours will be returned within two business days.
