MILWAUKEE, Aug. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Law enforcement officers from throughout the state will stake out Dunkin' Donuts rooftops to benefit Special Olympics Wisconsin, on Friday, August 14, beginning at 6 a.m. through 11 a.m.

That morning, for the fourth year in a row, police officers are scheduled to cover 43 Dunkin' Donuts rooftops throughout Wisconsin to heighten awareness and raise money for the Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) for Special Olympics Wisconsin...rain or shine!

In return for the police officers "doing time" at their restaurants, Dunkin' Donuts will donate $5,000 to the organization. In addition, each guest who visits a Cop on a Rooftop location that day and makes a donation will receive a Free Medium Hot or Iced Coffee coupon.*

Last year, Wisconsin police officers raised nearly $38,000 from atop 30 Dunkin' Donuts rooftops for Special Olympics Wisconsin.

When asked why she supports Special Olympics Wisconsin, Specialist Niki Nelson, of the Waukesha Police Department and long-time Law Enforcement Torch Run participant, says, "Volunteering gives me the opportunity to meet athletes not just in my local area but from throughout the state. The positive interaction with the athletes is something you just cannot put into words."

The LETR is the largest grass-roots fundraising program and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics. Law enforcement officers from the 50 United States, 12 Canadian provinces and territories and 44 other countries carry the Flame of Hope(TM) in honor of Special Olympics athletes. In 2014, the Wisconsin LETR raised more than $2.3 million with more than 1,400 registered participants representing law enforcement agencies across the state.

Special Olympics Wisconsin provides year-round training and competition opportunities through 17 different Olympic-type sports for nearly 10,000 individuals with intellectual disabilities. The organization holds more than 650 competitions statewide and five state tournaments per year.
