Our Managing Director, Richard Caldwell, answers your questions sent during the month of July:

What is Dyesol's expertise for building a large-scale mass production?

Dyesol is expert in manufacture of photo-active materials and small-scale, high performing PV devices. However, Dyesol has limited engineering expertise in the production of the capital equipment necessary for mass PSC PV manufacture. Dyesol is in the early stages of forming relationships with companies with suitable and complementary engineering expertise. These companies can assist Dyesol in many ways and help reduce the risk associated with mass manufacture.

Have EPFL's licensees divided the market(s) between themselves (for example: GCELL = small consumables, Dyesol = BIPV)?

The EPFL Licence is non-exclusive and has no product or geographical boundaries. Dyesol protects itself from potential competition by developing its own IP and by entering distribution relationships which guarantee routes to market.

Is the fact that perovskite cells contain lead not contradictory to the technology being environmentally friendly?

Lead is a metal with very good electrochemical properties. It is a key ingredient in our methyl ethyl metal halides or perovskites. However, at higher concentrations, lead is considered a health risk. The low levels of lead used in our PV architectures do not infringe the levels prohibited under EU REACH legislation. Moreover, the perovskites are contained in hermetically sealed modules. Dyesol has an active research program to find high performing lead substitutes.
