More than half of the Germans just want to turn around and go back to sleep when the alarm clock goes off in the morning. That is what 55 percent said in a survey from E.ON and Kantar EMNID. Around one third (31 percent) do not even want to speak to or be spoken to by anyone in the first hour after getting up.

The undisputed nation of early risers in Europe, by contrast, is Romania, where 40 percent of those surveyed said they are full of energy right after getting up and want to start the day immediately. That's by far the highest percentage, followed by the French (perhaps after a quick croissant and small coffee) with only 29 percent in second place.

Germany, together with Sweden (17 percent each) as well as Great Britain and the Czech Republic (16 percent each) comes last in terms of early birds catching the worm.

Speaking of birds: The most productive night owls work in Turkey. 18 percent of those questioned are nocturnal there. The Swedes lead the ranking for evening activity with 23 percent. In both disciplines, the early risers from Romania come last, which is hardly surprisingly. Only ten percent (evenings) or five percent (nights) of them still feel fit at this time.

These results are part of the study 'Living in Europe 2018', for which E.ON and Kantar EMNID questioned around 10,000 people in the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Sweden, Turkey and the UK.
