GALESBURG, MI … Power management company Eaton has increased the horsepower and Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) ratings for the company's line of medium-duty Procision 7-speed transmissions. The new ratings were added to expand market coverage to a broader range of potential customers and to increase compatibility with additional diesel engines. Horsepower ratings have been increased from 260 HP to 300 HP, with GVW rating increased to up to 35,000 pounds.

'By extending the horsepower and GVW ratings on Procision, Eaton is providing more customers with the opportunity to spec this transmission to help them achieve better fuel economy and a smoother ride for drivers across applications,' said Jeff Walker, director, global, Eaton's Vehicle Group. 'Fleets that have specified and are running Procision today have seen the benefits, and today's announcement broadens the range of applications for Procision.'

The Procision transmission's optional Park Pawl feature has also been extended and is now available at a GVW rating of up to 33,000 pounds, up from the previous 26,000 pounds. Park Pawl is an alternative parking brake incorporated within the transmission that eliminates the need for air disc brakes, as well as the need for operators to have a Commercial Driver's License.

Introduced in early 2016, Eaton Procision transmissions feature a dual clutch design and electronic shifting that uses grade, vehicle weight and throttle input to provide optimal fuel consumption and smooth, continuous delivery of torque to a vehicle's wheels under all shift conditions. Eaton employed the dual clutch technology to allow for better acceleration from a stopped position, and to optimize shift points that will efficiently get to the highest gear. Gear changes are made by swapping the engine torque between clutches with the next gear pre-selected.

The dual clutch module is fully contained within the transmission, hydraulically controlled and oil cooled for extended life. A five-spring damper is used to control torsional vibrations and is fully sealed to eliminate contamination. Smart features such as Eaton Dynamic Shifting allow the transmission to automatically switch between economy and performance shift schedules based on mass, grade and driver demand. Base shift results are modified dynamically based on available torque, engine acceleration and grade.

Eaton Procision transmissions have been targeted to meet and exceed the needs of a wide range of medium-duty markets, including pickup and delivery, school buses, tow trucks, beverage vehicles, rental fleets and more.
