Through the first 10 months of 2016, bed bug infestations in the U.S. are up 10 percent compared to the same period in 2015, according to Ecolab data, with October being the busiest month of the year for bed bug treatments.
One likely cause of the rise in bed bug infestations is increased international travel and record hotel occupancy rates in the U.S. The frequency of bed bug sightings has also increased in more locations, including office buildings, hospitals, restaurants, retail shops, movie theaters and college dorm rooms.
While there are limitations to preventing the introduction of bed bugs, Ecolab can help proactively treat areas of concern to limit the potential for infestations. 'It is impossible to prevent bed bugs from entering a hotel, but an infestation can be quickly contained and treated,' said Dr. Joelle Olson, lead entomologist, Ecolab Pest Elimination.
