The French government is preparing to authorize Electricite de France SA (EDF.FR) to extend the lifetime of its 58 nuclear reactors in France, the weekly Journal du Dimanche reports Sunday.
The decision has already been taken to extend the lifetime of the reactors to 50 years from 40, but the government is waiting for the right moment to announce it, the newspaper reports, citing one source close to the government.
Another source, described as close to the ecology ministry, is reported saying the decision on whether to extend will be taken by the end of the year.
An EDF spokeswoman declined to comment Sunday. The ecology ministry could not be immediately reached for comment.
