Brookdale to Open its First Community in Maine. Scarborough, Maine, Dec. 29, 2014 - As Maine's population ages and Alzheimer's cases rise, the nation's largest senior living provider will come to the state for the first time with the opening of a new assisted living and dementia care community in Scarborough. Brookdale, based in Brentwood, Tenn., is the operator of Bellavita at Scarborough, scheduled to open at 18 Black Point Rd., Scarborough, in early 2015. In establishing the new community, which is expected to create over 50 full and part-time jobs, Brookdale is entering its 47th state.

Nearly a third of Maine's population will be 60 or older by 2030, an increase of 40% from 2012, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.  The Alzheimer's Association projects the number of people with dementia in the state will go up by 40% in the coming decade.

Bellavita at Scarborough will offer 61 assisted living and 20 Alzheimer's care apartments, all on a rental basis. The community's abundant amenities include a spacious dining room as well as a smaller one for private parties, a movie theater, a beauty salon/barber shop, gardens, walking paths, emergency safety pendants for residents and transportation for medical appointments and shopping. It will also provide a host of activities that promote meaningful lifestyles and new friendships. The dementia care program will offer individualized care and purposeful physical, mental and social engagement activities in a secured setting.

"We know that more seniors and their families are looking for services and we are excited about providing these wonderful new options with the upcoming opening of Bellavita at Scarborough," said Melissa Craig, who has been appointed its executive director. Craig, a licensed residential care administrator and Maine native, brings over 15 years of senior living experience to her new position. She previously served as interim regional sales and marketing director in Virginia for Brookdale, which will operate Bellavita at Scarborough. Craig earned an M.B.A. at Husson University; she received a bachelor degree in social work from the University of Maine
