Niterói, a Brazilian city with around 500,000 residents facing Rio de Janeiro across Guanabara Bay, is now the first city in South America to introduce an innovative urban traffic management solution in partnership with ENGIE

Niterói, Brazil's new smart city

In Brazil, ENGIE is working with the city of Niterói to deliver sustainable mobility by rolling out an innovative urban traffic management system. This smart system has already proved its value in Paris and London, and will be introduced here to improve the energy and environmental performance of city center traffic. This first for South America establishes Niterói as the model for more smart cities to come.

'The new solution changes the organizational structure of the city's urban traffic management system, making it the best in the state of Rio de Janeiro,' continues Rodrigo Neves, the Mayor of Niterói.

New technologies that benefit residents

This September, the Niterói traffic operations control center will become an urban traffic management command center. Served by 34 miles of optical cables, it will operate in the ten most traffic-dense areas of the city using digital solutions provided by ENGIE. Hi-Tech controllers and more than 200 smart cameras will be used to control traffic at city and local level. Thanks to these technologies, traffic signals will, for example, act autonomously and without human intervention to adapt the red-to-green cycle autonomously in response to traffic flow to ease congestion in real time. Another valuable function will inform drivers of their journey times using a total of 14 digital panel screens displaying variable messages.

This innovative urban traffic management system will benefit the city in many ways. These benefits include a traffic system that flows 30% more freely on average and in real time, shorter journey times, lower fuel consumption, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and fewer accidents... all of which can only improve quality of life for city residents.
