Company uses technology to build smarter energy future for customers

NEW ORLEANS - Entergy New Orleans customers are a step closer to enjoying the benefits of a smarter energy future - which include faster outage restoration, improved customer service and access to money-saving tools.

The New Orleans City Council approved Feb. 8 a multi-year plan to install advanced meters at homes and businesses in Orleans Parish.

'We applaud the council's action in laying the foundation for grid-modernization technologies that not only will create a smarter energy future for our city, but also offer a wide range of benefits to our customers,' said Charles Rice, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans.

Upgrading to advanced meters has numerous benefits:

  • Customers can get timely and more detailed information on their energy use so they can manage their power consumption, which can lead to lower bills.
  • Entergy New Orleans will have a clearer real-time picture of the power grid and how it is operating. Outages can be identified more accurately, so crews can arrive on the scene faster to safely make repairs.
  • With better information, customers' billing and service questions can be answered more quickly and effectively, improving customer service.

Entergy New Orleans is currently designing and will deploy the systems and infrastructure needed to install the advanced meters. The actual installation of advanced meters will begin in early 2019 and will be completed by the end of 2021. This timeline is based on experiences from other utilities that have installed advanced meters and will ensure a cost-effective and high-quality deployment. Entergy New Orleans' natural gas customers also will have their gas meters retrofitted with new technology that will provide customers with data needed to better manage gas usage and help lower bills.
