Time change spotlights a good time to consider private-area lighting for safety, peace of mind

BATON ROUGE, La. - Louisianans will join the nation in setting their clocks back on Nov. 4, marking the end of daylight saving time. With the ushering in of fall's shorter days, now is the perfect time for customers to think about how to keep homes and businesses well-lit - and safer.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, security lighting is the most significant crime deterrent when used wisely. It enhances natural surveillance, delineates private and public spaces, can direct access and can increase security and safety.

That's why Entergy is reminding customers that the company's private-area lighting is an affordable way to help prevent crime, stay safe and ensure peace of mind - especially during this time of year when darkness falls earlier each evening.

"Private-area lighting is important for customers, particularly when the shorter days of fall and winter offer less natural light outside," said Pat Waters, vice president of Entergy's lighting business. "For a low monthly cost, customers can keep their families, employees, homes and businesses safe, secure and functionally lit year-round. Safety is always Entergy's first priority - for our electric and gas service as well as r our lighting business. We are pleased to be able to offer security-lighting solutions that take the cover of darkness away from lawbreakers and are a proven step in crime-prevention efforts."

By filling out a short form available online at entergylouisiana.com, customers can let Entergy know they are interested in having a security light installed at their home or business. Entergy will contact them quickly, and a lighting expert will assist them in determining what best suits their needs. The process can also be initiated by calling 1-866-603-0192.

Open-bottom and directional security lights are available in a variety of sizes for home and business use. Customers are charged a set monthly fee for the lights, with the cost added to existing bills. The charges vary depending on the light's wattage. If a pole must be installed to set up the lighting, an additional fee is charged. There is no fee for regular maintenance, which includes bulb replacement. If the light and pole are destroyed in a storm event - such as a hurricane or tornado - they will be replaced free-of-charge to the customer.

"We use industry-standard products," Waters said. "They are fully tested, weather-resistant and commercial-grade. Our installers are fully trained electrical workers who keep safety first and foremost in their work."
