Efficient and environmentally friendly EnviThan gas upgrading technology

Lohne, 8 October 2015 - In the scope of the first feed-in of a new 350 standard cubic metre (Sm³) EnviThan plant in Saxony-Anhalt, the biogas all-rounder from Lower Saxony has reported the commissioning of its fourth gas upgrading plant in Germany.

The plant in Beetzendorf successfully joins the EnviThan projects in Sachsendorf, Köckte and Forst. Since the beginning of September, the plant of BioEnergie Beetzendorf GmbH, a subsidiary of the Agrargenossenschaft eG (agricultural cooperative) Beetzendorf, is feeding into the existing low-pressure network of Avacon AG, Salzgitter. 'Thanks to our plant, we can deliver a maximum of 36 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of green energy per year', remarks Bodo Meyer, the Managing Director. Thus, the plant, which is operated by four employees, can supply 1,800 households with gas.

'For us, this is the third joint construction project with the agricultural cooperative Beetzendorf', explains Christian Ernst, EnviTec Sales Manager for Germany. After the construction of the first biogas plant with 625 kW in 2011; and the first construction stage with 837 kW set up in 2014, the gas upgrading via EnviThan perfectly complements the green energy concept of the agricultural cooperative.

Green energy via gas upgrading is also requested from abroad

Even European neighbouring countries like France and England have shown increasing interest for the innovative EnviThan biogas upgrading technology used in Beetzendorf. In December of the last year, the first biogas plant with gas upgrading was commissioned in the Oxfordshire village of Ipsden in Great Britain. Using the EnviThan biogas upgrading, Icknield Gas Ltd. delivers an energy value of approximately 35 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of biomethane per year. For the environmentally friendly and extremely cost efficient process, EnviTec Biogas equips its upgrading plants with membrane modules from Evonik Industries. They purify the raw biogas generated in biogas plants to more than 97 percent content.

Another two gas upgrading projects are currently being constructed in Great Britain. Both containers for a plant for Rockscape Energy Ltd. were produced in Saerbeck and dispatched in September. 'We are planning to put the plant into operation in October', says Ernst. Even Brinklow Gas Ltd., which is operated by Anthony Mark Aston and Dale William Aston, is awaiting the commissioning of the EnviThan system in November. 'The plant has already been pre-tested; the containers are head to England', notes the sales manager.

Furthermore, the membrane process scores in the Asian market - in Minhe, China, the first biomethane plant of EnviTec in the 'Middle Kingdom' is nearing completion. After commissioning, the plant will produce 1,000 Sm3/h of biomethane; the crude gas will come from the existing biogas plant. The customer is one of the biggest poultry farmers in the world - the Shandong Minhe Biological SCI-Tech Co.
