Hospital da Luz International Congress Marked by High Scientific Level

Hospital da Luz International Clinical Congress Leaping Forward, held from 9 to 13 May, in Lisbon, received praise from national and foreign speakers and participants, which considered it an event of high scientific level and a success.

In the three auditoriums of Centro Cultural de Belém - where took place, daily and simultaneously, sessions on different oncologic diseases -, there were about 1800 participations, in this major medical scientific congress ever organized in Portugal in the field.

The dimension of the congress can also be attested by the number of speakers: about 140 foreign specialists and 40 Portuguese experts, which exposed their views on the latest discoveries and therapeutics in gastrointestinal, lung, breast, urologic, gynecologic, nervous system tumors and blood cancer, as well as in transversal themes such as immunotherapy, palliative care, nutrition, nursing and simulation in oncologic training. The interventions were always followed by discussions, many of them quite lively, with very participative audiences.

In the end, the congress and works were applauded by many speakers, starting with Manuel Sobrinho Simões, founder and director of the Institute of Cellular and Molecular Immunology and Pathology of Universidade do Porto (IPATIMUP), who made the first intervention at the congress opening ceremony. But many others insisted on stressing the importance of the event - as, for instance, Fátima Carneiro, Francisco Castro e Sousa, Maria do Carmo Fonseca, João Vinagre and Daniela Chaló, among other Portuguese researchers and experts, and Antoine Tesnière, Carla Prado, David Hui, Joan Vansteenkiste, Manuel Hidalgo, Paul Schneider, Markus Büchler, Richard Baum, Robin Kennedy and Ruben Sallum, among foreign specialists.

'The importance of this event is huge. The biggest names in the world came here to talk about what they work in, what they already do and what they anticipate for the future', highlighted José Luís Passos Coelho, director of the Congress and of the Oncology Centre of Hospital da Luz Lisboa. Isabel Vaz, Luz Saúde CEO, emphasized, in her turn, 'the ambition of a clinical organization that intends to keep projecting into the future, especially in what concerns one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century, cancer'.
