System investments will help maintain reliability for all customers when temps soar

BOSTON- Anyone who's grown up around Boston knows Lambert's Market. The beloved family-owned grocery store and deli, now with multiple locations, has been in business for over 65 years and shows no signs of slowing down - and relies on electricity to keep the business thriving.

Nino Lambert estimates their Westwood location serves over 2,000 customers a day. With 50 percent of their business being prepared foods in the 8,000 sq. ft. store, 3,000 sq. ft. is dedicated solely to refrigeration. 'The most important thing we have at our stores is electricity. Everything we buy is alive - it has a shelf life and it has to go,' said Lambert. 'From the time clock our employees use, to the product we send out the door with our customers, there's no way we could do any of it without power.'

In an effort to fortify the electric system to handle high summertime demand, the company works year-round upgrading existing infrastructure to ensure all customers can enjoy dependable power.

'We're always working to strengthen the electric system so that we can continue providing customers with the reliable service they deserve,' said Eversource Vice President of Electric Field Operations Doug Foley. 'Our regular inspections of the system combined with robust programs to upgrade infrastructure and manage vegetation help ensure our system is prepared to serve customers as the demand for power increases during the summer months.'

Eversource is continuously upgrading the electric system in communities across Massachusetts. Annual projects undertaken across the company's service area increase the amount of electricity that's available when demand for it is highest; allow the system to better withstand the impact of storms; and provide backup power options to reduce the duration of outages when they occur.

This year, system improvements in Massachusetts include:

  • Construction of two major 115,000 volt substations in Boston - on Seafood Way and Electric Avenue - improving electric service and reliability within the city's South Boston Waterfront and Allston/Brighton neighborhoods, as well as in the Longwood Medical area and the Town of Watertown.
  • Adding additional automated switching devices to the system, allowing the company to reroute electricity around trouble spots to reduce the frequency and duration of power outages.
  • Piloting new protective equipment that will allow these benefits to reach even more customers.
  • Completing aerial and foot patrols to inspect electrical equipment, lines and structures, including main lines and major connections in every city and town the company serves. All issues found were repaired on a prioritized basis.
  • Continuing tree work around the state as part of the company's comprehensive vegetation management program, with an increase in enhanced tree trimming and tree removal programs. All of this work continues to benefit customers by improving reliability, reducing outages, and resulting in shorter outage durations when they do occur.
