A new report, released by the Northeast Gas Association (NGA), highlights the positive impact natural gas has on the Massachusetts economy and environment. Part of the organization's Massachusetts Energy Reliability Awareness Campaign, the 32-page report notes among other findings that Massachusetts' natural gas distribution companies have added 200,000 residential customers since 2000, employ 4,000 workers directly, pay over $100 million annually in city and town property taxes, and have cut their greenhouse gas emissions by two-thirds since 1990.

With over 500,000 natural gas customers in two states, Eversource is well aware of the benefits natural gas provides to the Northeast's economy and the customers who use it.

The report's findings further underscore the need and value of increasing natural gas infrastructure in the region. In 2015, 65% of electricity in the Bay State came from power plants fueled by natural gas, a number that will only continue to rise as area plants, including the coal-fired Brayton Point Power Station and Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, shut down.

NGA president & CEO Thomas Kiley said, 'This report documents and reaffirms an important reality: Natural gas is good for Massachusetts. Every day natural gas delivers enormous benefits to our state's economy and environment.'
