More than 40 young adults with autism and developmental disabilities across the state will have amazing opportunities this summer to further their education and indulge in some fun recreational activities thanks to a work-study program at Ädelbrook in Cromwell. They'll visit a theme park, go on a college tour, see how ice cream is made, and even work at local stores.

'They wouldn't get this opportunity at too many other places,' said Marcy Pereira, the vocational coordinator at Ädelbrook. 'Our students have a chance to earn and save money while working at local businesses like CVS and Marshalls.'

The non-profit offers a variety of programs to help children, young adults, and families with developmental and behavioral challenges. The summer work-study program is funded through local grants and Eversource is proud to contribute $2,500 towards the cause.

'This summer program provides an excellent opportunity for these young adults to learn more about their community while boosting their confidence,' said Rod Powell, President of Corporate Citizenship at Eversource. 'We're committed to making a difference in the communities we serve and supporting Ädelbrook's work-study program is a great way to give back to our customers and neighbors.'

Ädelbrook works closely with businesses to have their students work at no cost for the business. Students are paid through grants.

'Being out in the workforce helps them build self-esteem, work ethic, and social skills. Not only does it benefit the students, but it also educates the employees at these businesses about people who have autism,' said Heide Perham, the director of marketing and communications at Ädelbrook. 'Our students start to feel like they are part of the community, which is huge, and businesses realize how hardworking and valuable they are.'
