Release coating experts from Evonik presented technology trends and the significance of sustainability for the industry at the Global Release Liner Conference in Amsterdam, March 20-21.

AWA Alexander Watson Associates hosted the Global Release Liner Industry Conference & Exhibition, which attracted approx. 200 delegates from across the industry, ranging from raw material suppliers and paper, film and silicone producers to machinery and equipment companies and manufacturers of final labels, tapes and release liners. Among them was also the RC Silicone team from the Interface & Performance Business Line of Evonik Industries, who presented a table-top display and two papers.

Part of the program was a market and industry panel discussion. Several market players from the silicone and release liner supplier side discussed technology trends and the significance of sustainability for the industry. Dr. Stefan Stadtmueller, Product Line Manager CS Surface Technologies, explained how UV-curing silicones from Evonik could provide answers to both questions: They enable the use of filmic substrates instead of paper, as no thermal stress to the release liner is involved. Filmic substrate allows down-gauging to a thinner release liner, which after use also can be recycled.

A market trend, in which Evonik plays an active role, is to completely renounce the use of release liners. This technology is referred to as "Linerless Technology". As many initiatives are on-going in the industry, a one day seminar was focused on this topic and the question "is it a disruptive technology or will it remain a niche application"? Evonik was predominantly cited in several papers as a key player on the silicone supplier side, as UV offers many advantages for this technology. Georg Michels, Regional Product Line Manager, presented a well-accepted paper on the different systems available in the market today, outlining also the role and competences of Evonik.

In a parallel silicone technology seminar Hardi Doehler, Innovation Manager, gave a presentation addressing the importance of the correlation between silicones and coating equipment, and options for optimization, using the example of a 5-roller coater.

The event provided an excellent opportunity to learn about latest industry news and to network, and demonstrated the excellent reputation RC Silicone enjoys in the industry.
