The Southeastern Electric Exchange (SEE), has named Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) a 2015 Industry Excellence Award winner. BGE was recognized for its “Business Intelligence and Data Analytics” initiative at the SEE Annual Conference and Trade Show held in Hershey, Pa. in June. The company received the award for the winning project in the Customer Service and Billing category.

The SEE Industry Excellence Awards program recognizes member companies for successfully implementing projects that demonstrate innovation, improvement and technical complexity. BGE’s award-winning project developed solutions for integrating data from eight systems -- a total of 35 billion records -- in order to more effectively identify opportunities to improve the efficiency and operation of BGE’s gas and electric systems. With the advanced analytics, for example, the company can now identify instances of operating meters that are connected to inactive customer accounts. BGE worked with C3 Energy and Accenture on the project, which led to process and technology improvements that will save BGE and our customers millions of dollars annually. The benefits also include customer service enhancements, as the company can provide customers with more specific, detailed information on their energy use.

“We’re charged with delivering electricity safely and reliably in an environment of increasing demand and changing customer needs,” said J. Andrew Dodge, BGE’s vice president of technical services. “It is critical to have the systems in place to support these changes. We’re pleased to be recognized by our peers at the Southeastern Electric Exchange for our focus on being innovative with our tools and the way we work.”

The Southeastern Electric Exchange is a non-profit, non-political trade association of investor-owned electric utility companies. Founded in 1933, the organization seeks to enhance the operational performance of its member companies and provides mutual aid coordination to support storm restoration activities.

BGE has received SEE Industry Excellence Awards in several categories in previous years, including 2014 honors for Safety, Distribution and Rates and Regulation.

BGE sister utility PECO in Philadelphia also was recognized by SEE with the 2015 Total Company Safety Award. PECO won the award for achieving the best (lowest) Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable incidence rate for the year among SEE member companies.
