MORRIS, Ill. - Exelon Generation will be conducting volume testing on six sirens in the Emergency Planning Zone of the Dresden nuclear plant on Sept. 18 and 19. The siren volume testing is a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requirement to ensure the sirens will meet their expected sound levels.

Each siren will be tested one time and will run for a total of two to three minutes. The sirens will not rotate for the test and will be pointed in a direction away from populated areas. Because this is only a test, no response by the public is necessary.

Dresden Generating Station is located approximately 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The station's two operating units can produce more than 1,800 megawatts, enough electricity to power nearly two million average homes. Dresden Unit 1, which began commercial operation in 1960 and was retired in 1978, has been designated a Nuclear Historic Landmark by the American Nuclear Society.
