CHICAGO - Exelon was singled out as the energy sector leader when Points of Light, the world's largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, named the country's 50 most community-minded companies this week. The Civic 50 winners were announced on Tuesday evening at the Points of Light Conference on Volunteering and Service in Seattle.

'Being accountable to the communities where we live and work is one of Exelon's values,' said Steve Solomon, Exelon's vice president of corporate relations, who accepted the award on the company's behalf. 'We appreciate Points of Light's continued focus on this important measure of a company's success -- its community impact. Exelon is honored to be in the company of these impressive corporate citizens.'

The Civic 50 winners were selected based on four dimensions:

  • Investment: how extensively and strategically the company applies its resources to community engagement, including employee time and cash and in-kind giving
  • Integration: how the company integrates community engagement programs into key business functions
  • Institutionalization: how the company supports community engagement through organizational policies and incentives
  • Impact: how does the company measure the social and business impact of its community engagement program?

In 2016, Exelon companies and the Exelon Foundation donated more than $46 million to nonprofits. Exelon employees contributed more than 170,000 hours of community service and pledged close to $8 million through charitable donations and giving campaigns that are matched by the company. The company also encourages employees to get involved in community causes by supporting events such as #Giving Tuesday, the national day of giving, and National Volunteer Week, when company leaders spearhead projects such as building playgrounds, planting sustainable gardens and serving meals at community centers.

'In the fifth year of honoring the most community-minded companies in the nation, The Civic 50 truly highlights the commitment to community and civic engagement of America's leading brands,' said Jennifer Lawson, president of networks at Points of Light. 'Encouraged by calls for responsible citizenship from shareholders, employees and customers-but also driven by a desire to build trust and define their brands-Civic 50 companies are putting communities at the center of business.'

Fortune recently named Exelon to its 2017 list of the World's Most Admired Companies, the company's 11th year on the list. The company was also listed on JUST Capital and Forbes magazine's inaugural 'JUST 100.'
