Dr. Zach Owens, Senior Managing Engineer in Exponent's Thermal Sciences practice, will be presenting at ITHERM 2017, May 30 - June 2, 2017 at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida.

ITherm 2017 is the leading international conference for scientific and engineering exploration of thermal, thermo-mechanical and emerging technology issues associated with electronic devices, packages, and systems. ITherm 2017 is being held along with the 67th Electronic Components and Technology Conference (ECTC), a premier electronic packaging conference.

Dr. Owens' presentation is entitled, 'Evaluation of Breathable Enclosures for Thermal Management of Outdoor Electronics.' Several other Exponent consultants co-authored the presentation, including: Drs. Lindsey Gilman, Reeve Dunne, and Abid Kemal.

Thermal design of electronic enclosures for outdoor use is complicated by the need to isolate the system from moisture, dust, and other environmental contaminants. Traditionally this isolation is achieved by using sealed enclosures; however, breathable, water-resistant materials present an opportunity to achieve the thermal benefits of a vented enclosure while also maintaining the isolation offered by sealed enclosures. This presentation by Dr. Owens and his co-authors aims to address what might be possible if the textile and polymer technologies from your ski jacket were applied to your cell phone or laptop.
